Picky Eaters?

Do you have kids that are good eaters, or are they picky? Does it sometimes feel like they hardly eat enough to keep body and soul together? What do you do about it?

My daughter's always been good about most foods but there are a few that she's never wanted to touch. She got sick on bananas as a baby for one thing and never touched them since. Two others are brussels sprouts and "slimy okra".

Besides that she's always been very good with vegetables... not so great when it comes to fruit.

You have a sensible and discriminating daughter, Brussels sprouts are totally disgusting, I can't imagine why anyone would eat them!

My nine year old son is terrible when it comes to eating things. He tends to pick his foods by texture. Veggies he is terrible at but he will at least try different things just not a lot that he actually likes.

My children had stages when they were picky, I didn't make a big deal of it but I didn't go out of my way to accommodate fads either. They eat reasonably well now.

I think it is a mistake to get too wound up about picky eaters. Just keep offering a variety of good food and if they don't eat it don't make a fuss, but make sure they don't snack between meals. They will eat when they are ready.

I agree, kernow. It took years before my daughter developed an appetite. My son, however, ate everything except his silverware and was always hungry for more.

I actually mentioned that my son doesn't eat vegetables and fruits and his pediatrician mentioned the V8 Fusion which I just got some of and he really likes it. I wouldn't me to concerned but I have tried a lot of different stuff to try with him and the only vegetable he likes is corn and the only fruit is watermelon and cantaloupe.

Tater keep offering him little tastes of fruit and veg. Try the child friendly ones first and just a tiny bit. offer the fruit with a small helping of ice cream (or yogurt) or jelly (the wobbly stuff not jam, I don't know what you call it). The deal is that he only gets a little more ice cream if he eats the tiny taste of fruit. You can do the same with a taste of veg and something savoury. Don't make it a big deal, just offer it as a treat. If he feels he is missing out he will be tempted to eat.

I keep attempting them but I do know like in ice cream if there are strawberries or bananas in the ice cream he just doesn't like it. It's really weird in the sense that you would think that he would like bananas and he don't even like them.
