A friend is struggling with her young adult's growing older as he will leave home in a couple of years.

I suggested that she start making a list of all the things she can explore once he is gone.

This is a very good idea and one that I think a lot of people should remember.
I might even have to use the plan when my daughter leaves the nest.

Don't make too many plans, because when they leave they often don't go far and they are back with their laundry before you have time to blink!

Hehe Good point, kernow. Well in that case then I'll start saving up to buy her a washing machine for Christmas.

When they move out it is surprising what a difference it makes to your household shopping. When my daughter moved out we saved a fortune on shampoo and etc, but our consumption of toilet paper reduced dramatically, I think she must have been using it to take her make up off.

At least they are adults when this happens. You can still make more plans than you could if they had never left.
