I think I was very lucky in that we really didn't have a problem with my daughter wanting to stay in her own bed. I often stayed extra long reading and/or talking, but at least it was her own bed.

I think you're right, Katharina. If they need more of your attention, do it in their bed and then return to your own.
By the time our kids were in the higher grades of elementary school, we started to close our bedroom door. We told them they could come in if needed. They seemed happy with that, and our son started closing his door as well. We tried to stress personal privacy with our kids.

That's a much better solution than a kid thinking it's "see ya in the morning" with locked doors. I'd think that would be traumatic.
