Teaching children?
How would the best way to teach children about the internet and what is on it? I need something that would frighten them - to stop them goign ton those naughty websites and closing bad popups.

Since you can't really block them from the internet. They will find away to get on, I'd say introduce them to it at your own pace in a controlled environment.

Why would you want to frighten your children. Scaring children really doesn't seem the best way to encourage them and help them make wise choices. There are some really great websites designed as useful and safe places for children to explore. There are wonderful online resources associated with children's broadcasting (PBS Kids, Noggin, Discovery, Animal Planet, etc) with games and activities that relate to some of their favorite shows. You can find resources like podcasts, message boards, games, etc.

Part of responsible parenting is direct involvement in your child's life. Open communication is essential. I watch television with my daughter, listen to music with her, and we explore websites together. Right now, she's young enough that I have to help her to navigate the web. As she gets older, and more independent, we'll explore the boundaries together. I have no intention of giving her a television or a computer in her room for quite some time. The computer she uses will be set up in such a way that I can glance in her direction and see what she's doing and where she's at both for her safety and my own peace of mind.

I think that there are some programs that can help you control what they do online. I believe they are called cyber sitters and net nannies. I am sure that if you do a search on those terms you should be able to find something. I think that would help better than anything else at this point in time.
Good luck to you!

I agree with Ms.Andi....being involved is the best way. And really, if your computer is cleaned up on a regular basis, you should not get a lot of nasty pop ups.....

Help your children explore by teaching them what is appropriate and what is not.

If you scare your children it will make them more curious to what the fuss is all about. I agree you need to just get a child secure programme and a filter to stop popups. you could also make sure the child is in a room where an adult can watch to see what they are upto.

Good luck.

I know our computer is in a room where I can see what my sons are on. I usually put a site up for them and then when they want another one I have a list that I have of sites that are good for children and I pick another one.
