Do Your Kids Learn About Computers In School?

When I was in elementary school we didn't have the kind of computers that are around now. When my kids were younger they learned a lot of subjects on computers and learned about computers themselves.

I'm almost embarrassed to say that my teen daughter know more about computers than I do. There are times I need her help in doing something. In a way I'm really proud of her but I feel as if I missed out on a lot when I was growing up.

Does anyone else feel this way?

Neither I have learned computers nor informatics in school , but my kids did.
However , there are a lot of things I have learned myself from books along with things I've learned from them.
Things that my kids know and I don't and are about optimization, SEO ,php, html things like that and I don't feel like I'd want to learn.

Well, I'm glad to say that I know a whole lot about computers, my job involves PHP and HTML coding and I do good in that area, as well. I also don't get myself lost with software or hardware problems and I always happen to know what to do for my computer to keep it running great. However, I am still 23 years old so I have actually grown up with a lot of computer exposure to begin with.

However, when I was in elementary school, we did not have computer-related subjects at all, and we were not taught about computers. It was only during my high school years that computers were introduced to us.
However, I feel that I did not learn from school, but that I have taught myself with the computer at home. Practice makes perfect, and the more I've used our computer I learned new things about it everyday until I got my own computer for myself.

My daughter is still 5 years old but she knows how to use a computer already. My computer is full of educational games for kids her age, and she enjoys playing them all so much.

I've been working with computers in one way or another for about 14 years now so my daughter knows the same about them, not more. (Because we both taught her what we know about them.)

She started an interest around age 4 and always wanted to learn more and more about how those machines work.

My children started learning about computers when they were in nursery (age 3) and they continued to learn all through their school education. I am good with computers, but I am glad to have their help now and then.

I can certainly relate to this statement... my daughter has gotten me out of
a number of potentially serious jams over time.

I use a computer all the time so I am fairly confident, and I have a good computer knowledge, but my children have grown up using them and they are much quicker at typing than I am.

I haven't really had too many instances wehre I felt less capbable on a computer, than someone younger, but then I use one at home day in and day out.

I have noticed, though, that many teachers really should get up to speed.

In elementary schools, there was a time when none of the computers had filters, so kids would figure out how to get to gaming sites, instead of doing the research assigned. Teachers couldn't tell that the student had two windows open and simply switched back and forth to hide their activities. I had to point out the maneuver several times.

Now, there are filters, but some teachers still need to take a few computer classes!

In my area teachers are very computer literate and they get regular training. As for the filters they are so tight that it makes it very hard to do legitimate research.

My kids learned about computers at school and from their dad, who was interested in the infernal machines since their inception. I, Luddite that I am, was dragged kicking and screaming into the computer age. Now, I don't mind it so badly, but if I want anything fancy done, I turn to my family.
