Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is basically a developmental disorder that is neurological in nature. In other words, it is a problem that happens while a person is going through their development stages (usually early childhood) and is also a problem that affects parts of the person’s brain area. ADHD as it is known for short is something that affects around five percent of the population as far as the best studies that have been done on the topic can tell. It is considered to be a chronic condition; meaning that it is likely to be of a very prolonged nature. As far as researchers know at the moment, ADHD is a disorder that affects someone for life around 60% of the time. As of the time of writing, there is no known cure for ADHD

Diagnosis

There are three different kinds of ADHD that can be diagnosed; a combined inattentive and hyperactive type, a predominately inattentive type and a predominantly hyperactive type. Those diagnoses are made based on the following criteria:
If six or more of the following list of nine have been present to the level where it has been disruptive to normal life, then there is an element of inattentiveness to the child’s ADHD.
1) Lack of attention to detail; careless mistakes made in work or school
2) Trouble keeping attention on tasks or recreational activities
3) Lack of listening when being spoken to directly
4) Lack of ability seemingly to follow instructions; lack of ability to finish homework, chores or work
5) Lack of organizational ability
6) Apparent disdain for activities requiring a lot of mental work
7) Frequent losing of pencils, school/work supplies etc.
8) Easy distraction
9) Forgetfulness

If six or more of the following list of nine have been present to the level where it has been disruptive to normal life, then there is an element of hyperactivity in the child’s ADHD.
1) Fidgeting and Squirming
2) Leaving seat when staying in seat is the expectation
3) Running or climbing during inappropriate times
4) Lack of ability to enjoy activities quietly
5) On the go a lot
6) Excessive talking
7) Blurts out answers and interrupts questions
8) Trouble waiting for turn
9) Interrupting others frequently

ADHD Treatment
As far as treatments go, there is no one treatment that will be the be all and end all to ADHD. There are a number of different things that can be used in order to help reduce the suffering or disruptiveness of a child with ADHD and these range anywhere from psychotherapy, to drug medication, to herbalist advice and any number of other natural treatments that have shown promise in different cases. It is important to realize that ADHD treatment is a very individual thing due to the lack of a real cure and therefore you should consider all of the options available and how they will affect the person being treated before deciding on an avenue to pursue. That is the most responsible way to handle ADHD treatment.
