hereditary conditions
If you had a serious health problem/disease that could be passed down to yoru child would you think twice before getting pregnant or not?

Wow, that's a tough question. There are some hereditary conditions that I would almost certainly try to avoid passing on to the next generation. Options like PGD* make a certain amount of sense. I've also known women through other forums and blogs who have opted to use egg or sperm donors to eliminate the risk of severe genetic problems.

On the other hand, those options are expensive and I can't help wondering if the ultimate result of assisted reproductive technology being used to screen for and prevent hereditary conditions is that it will ultimately result in those conditions effecting only those in lower income brackets.

*Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis

I would if the health problems was one that was very serious and had a high possibility of being passed on to a child.

Things like genetic disorders always have a percentage of how likely they are to pass on, and I guess that's a case by case scenario. However if it's something like drugs where your child gets born an addict, I'd say it's your responsibiliy not to have children

I haven't really thought of that before I got pregnant. Though, I am not suffering from anything that can be passed on to my child, my husband has asthma and I think my child has got it. She wheezes in her sleep and has to always sleep with a high pillow.

If it is a very serious disease, then yes, I would definitely be having second thoughts about getting pregnant. I would not like to have a baby suffering with my disease and battling it with her life just because I wanted a child for myself, I think I would then consider adoption or not have a child at all.

My husband once told me about a woman with leprosy who delivered a baby at a hospital that he happened to be at that exact moment. Everyone in the corridors were asked to leave the hallway as she was being wheeled in with a wheelchair. My husband told me that he was very scared because he happened to be in that exact corridor just as the woman was being brought in.
I think that although it is wonderful to still get to experience parenthood despite someone's disease, I just think that women should think really hard about it, if the agony of the disease is something they are willing to have their future children go through as well.

I guess it would depend on what the condition was. If it was something that could be controlled by medication I wouldn't hesitate to become pregnant. But if was something very serious then I would think twice about it.
