Blood Tests

Posted 25-02-2009 at 11:54 AM by Mom

I wanted to wait until I had officially missed my period before going for the blood test, and since I've been sick I had an extra excuse to go to the doctor.

I got to the rooms early, which was fortunate cos the doctor got to see me +-20 mins earlier than what I had booked for. I was SO nervous I was somewhere between bouncing off the walls and shaking. Turns out I have pharyngitis and a stomach bug (lucky me) and the doc put me on antibiotics which are apparently now safe in pregnancy - when did this happen? So I have officially been booked off for 3 days as the doctor doesn't want me to overdo it at the mo. I'm sure I'm not popular at the office, I've just come back from a week's leave & I've been booked off for 3 days. I've had to pick up some work at home because we are understaffed at the office, so my hubby wasn't very happy bout that. He's worried I'll put bubs at risk, but I'm at home taking it pretty easy and dealing with the work stuff here and there and making sure I get some rest in between.

Anyways, I went for the blood test & just got the result...I nearly fell over because the lady told me that I'm 5 weeks pregnant, which I told her is impossible since I only ovulated 3 weeks ago (unless that means its twins???? But that would only be a guess...). She reckons they work it out according to the protein levels or something like that. I of course phoned the gynae's rooms immediately & the lady there told me that the tests confuse everyone. Apparently when she had hers done the results said she was 6 weeks preggers, but after she saw the gynae he told her she was only 4 weeks pregnant. AND she said that a high protein count is a good thing, so maybe that has something to do with all these supplements I've been taking

I have my first official "pregnancy visit" with the gynae on 13 March. So far the only people who know are the doctors, my nurse (and dear friend I might add, who would need to cancel my MS meds) and of course the pplz at the labs. As mentioned before we don't want to announce it until after 8 weeks, just to make sure we're in the clear.

Everything seems to be running pretty well so far, I don't think we could have asked for a better run. Especially since these days you only have 20% chance falling pregnant on a month to month basis. First time, and nailed it (no pun intended).

It's all a bit surreal at the moment...I'm sure it will start to sink in after the first gynae appointment, or more specifically the first time I see or hear baby's heart beat...then they had better have a ton of tissues ready cos I'm sure I'm going to flood the rooms with tears of joy & awe of course!
